SUCCESS FOR ALL

Summer term

English

This half term, Year 4 will be studying Leaf and using the text to develop inference and comprehension skills. Pupils will explore ambitious vocabulary and learn how authors create tension and atmosphere in their writing. They will gather information through research and use this to write an engaging information report. In grammar lessons, children will focus on verb inflections, subordinate conjunctions, reported speech clauses, and spelling patterns from the Year 3 and 4 curriculum.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, pupils will be developing their understanding of money, time, and angles. They will learn to convert between pounds and pence, compare amounts of money, and solve a range of practical problems. Children will also practise reading analogue and digital clocks, converting between 12- and 24-hour time, and exploring units of time. In geometry, they will identify and compare angles, learn about triangles and shapes, and investigate lines of symmetry.

Science

Our Science topic focuses on Living Things and Their Habitats, with a particular emphasis on human impact on the environment. Children will investigate how litter affects local habitats and learn how different materials change over time. They will explore how microplastics enter the food chain and consider the consequences for wildlife. Pupils will also learn about environmental conservation, including how birds can be helped following oil spills.

Geography

This term’s Geography learning will focus on the world’s rainforests, linking closely to our whole-school topic. Pupils will learn what a biome is and identify key features of the Amazon Rainforest. They will explore the four layers of a tropical rainforest and discover the unique plants and animals that live there. Children will also investigate how the Amazon is changing and consider the impact of human activity on this important environment.
