At Earlsmead, our intention in Design and Technology is to inspire pupils to use their creativity to create products that are practical, whilst learning skills that will be beneficial both now and later on in their lives. DT lends itself to many other areas of the curriculum and our topics have been carefully chosen so that pupils can experience cross curricular learning throughout the year, ensuring that their learning is more well-rounded and relatable.

Our DT planning enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets set out in the National Curriculum, with our Reception units providing opportunities for children to begin their creative journeys. Our Kapow scheme of work enables knowledge and skills to be taught, sought and caught as pupils progress through year groups.  We intend to build an awareness of the impact of Design and Technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.

To ensure we have high standards of teaching and learning in Design and Technology, we implement a curriculum that is progressive, coherently sequenced and adapted to appeal to the needs of all children throughout Earlsmead Primary School.  We teach the knowledge and skills required for DT through a range of real or life-like, creative activities that will engage our children to work in a range of relevant contexts (for example, home, school, culture, industry, enterprise and the wider environment).

We measure progress in Design and Technology through ongoing POP (Proof of Progress) quizzes to start each lesson, leading up to final task at the end of each unit for every year group.  This, alongside the children's work produced in lessons, enables judgements to be made about their attainment in Design and Technology.
