Maths

This term in Year 5, we will focus on decimals and percentages. Students will learn to convert fractions to decimals and find percentages, helping them understand real-world applications, such as discounts.

Additionally, we will explore perimeter and area, including how to calculate the distance around shapes and the space they occupy. This unit will involve problem-solving exercises that demonstrate how these skills are used in everyday situations. Get ready for a productive term of learning and practical maths!

English

This term, Year 5 will be reading the Vehicle Text: FArTHER by Grahame Baker-Smith. Our focus will be on composing detailed setting and character descriptions, which will serve as our final pieces. Students will employ the key grammar and writing techniques covered so far. Once we have completed these pieces, we will be enhancing our formal writing skills as we prepare to draft formal letters so watch this space!

 

Science

This term in Year 5, we will study human development through the different stages of life. From infancy to old age, we will explore how our bodies change and grow. Students will engage in discussions and activities to understand the physical and emotional transformations that occur as we age. We will also invite guests to share their experiences, providing insight into what it’s like to grow up and grow older. This term promises to be informative and thought-provoking as we uncover the journey of human life.

Geography

This half term, we’re diving into the exciting world of hot desert biomes! We will uncover where they’re located by identifying their lines of latitude, explore their fascinating characteristics, and track down the largest deserts on every continent. We’ll marvel at the unique physical features that make deserts so intriguing, while also pondering how human activities can affect their climate and landscape. Along the way, we’ll discuss the threats these incredible ecosystems face, weigh up the perks and challenges of living in such an arid environment, and compare land use between two contrasting biomes. Finally, we’ll debate whether desert conditions are welcoming or not. Let’s embark on this thrilling adventure into the heart of the desert!
