SUCCESS FOR ALL

Spring term

Maths

This half term in maths, Year 6 have covered the following topics: fractions, converting units and ratio. In our unit of fractions, we learned how to multiply and divide fractions by an integer and how to find a fraction of an amount. For converting units, we covered both metric and imperial units of measure, exploring how to convert between different units using multiplying/dividing by 10, 100, and 1000. We then used our understanding of fractions into our topic of Ratio, where we looked at scale drawings, using scale factors, similar shapes and ratio problems.

Key learning we will remember in relation to Ratio:

English

The Ways of the Wolf | Smriti Halls                Shackleton's Journey: 1 : William Grill: Amazon.co.uk: Books

This term, year 6 will be using the above Vehicle Texts in English. In spring 1, the children studied 'The Ways of the Wolf' by Smriti Halls. Their writing outcomes included a Documentary Narrative and a Hunted Narrative. They produced some excellent final pieces using the key grammar and writer's knowledge studied so far for these units.

The wider curriculum

Year 6 have enjoyed learning about the similarities and differences between the ancient Maya and Anglo-Saxon civilisations during the first half-term.  They used timelines to explore where key events fit into wider historical context.  They explored how the Maya survived in rainforests and how both civilisations built homes.

Did you know the Maya were very clever and invented lots of things?  This included their own calendars, farming methods, writing systems, sports and religion!

In spring 2, Y6 explored the Alps mountain range.  There was a strong focus here on exploring the human and physical features of the Alps.  The children then progressed on to comparing one particular city, Innsbruck in Austria, to our local area of Harrow.

Y6 also had the chance to explore spreadsheets in computing and the circulatory system in science, amongst other learning in spring 1.  In spring 2, the class explored 3D modelling in computing and what is means to keep healthy and look after yourself in science.
