Maths
This term in Year 5, we will explore decimals, including their link to fractions and percentages, helping them to understand real-world applications like money and measurements.
Students will also work on geometry, learning about angles, shapes, and position, before moving on to measuring volume to deepen their understanding of capacity. Towards the end of the term, they will develop skills in negative numbers, preparing them for more advanced maths in Year 6.
This unit will involve problem-solving exercises that demonstrate how these skills are used in everyday situations. Get ready for a productive term of learning and practical maths!
English
This term, Year 5 will be reading the Vehicle Text: FArTHER by Grahame Baker-Smith. Our focus will be on composing detailed setting and character descriptions, which will serve as our final pieces. Students will employ the key grammar and writing techniques covered so far. Once we have completed these pieces, we will be enhancing our formal writing skills as we prepare to draft formal letters so watch this space!
Science
This term in Year 5, we will study human development through the different stages of life. From infancy to old age, we will explore how our bodies change and grow. Students will engage in discussions and activities to understand the physical and emotional transformations that occur as we age. We will also invite guests to share their experiences, providing insight into what it’s like to grow up and grow older. This term promises to be informative and thought-provoking as we uncover the journey of human life.
History
This term, we will be exploring Ancient Greece and its lasting impact. We'll explore Mount Olympus, home to gods like Zeus and Athena, whose myths still inspire stories today. We’ll also discuss Greek governance, including city-states like Athens, which introduced democracy, allowing citizens to vote—a system still used worldwide! The children will meet Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, whose ideas shaped modern thinking in education, science, and ethics.
