SUCCESS FOR ALL

Spring term

Maths

This half-term in maths, Year 5, covered fractions.  In our unit of fractions, we learnt how to find fractions equivalent to a unit fraction, find fractions equivalent to a non-unit fraction, recognise equivalent fractions, convert improper fractions to mixed numbers, convert mixed numbers to improper fractions, compare fractions less than 1, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and subtract from a mixed number. We used our understanding of fractions through visuals and kinaesthetic learning.

Key learning we will remember in relation to fractions:

  • Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number.
  • Identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths.
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, and denominators that are multiples of the same number.
  • Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams.

English

This term, year 5 will be using the below Vehicle Text: King Kong by Anthony Browne in English. In spring 1, the children studied 'The Lost Book of Adventure'. Their writing outcomes included a Survival Narrative and a Survival Guide. They produced some excellent final pieces using the key grammar and writer's knowledge studied so far for these units.

Science

This half-term, year 5 explored and investigated the properties of materials. One of the challenges was to investigate the viscosity of liquids.

Geography

During the first spring half-term, year 5 explored the importance of the oceans and why they matter. This was the main topic for their class assembly and the children have created some excellent informative posters and pieces of work to show off their understanding.
